Three Hills Creek tributary running through Herron Farms.

It all started when…

I was watching the cows head down to the creek for a drink.  We had rain the night before and the delicate soil around the creek edge was breaking off and falling into the creek.  There had to be a better way to manage both the livestock and the sensitive riparian areas around them.  Enter Red Deer County Conservation services.

Over the next several years projects such as fencing off the sensitive creek banks began.  Over the last eight years Herron Farms has been privileged to participate in several more projects including providing ecological goods and services through ALUS.  Ecological goods and services are provided by private land owners  for the greater good of all.  Some of these services and goods produced at Herron Farms include, improved water quality for down stream users, preserved wild life habitat, improvement of migratory bird habitat and many others.  These projects have also improved the management of the stock on the farm as well.  It's truly a 'win, win' for everyone involved.

In the late winter of 2017 I was privileged to participate in a digital story telling workshop about my experiences with ALUS and the land I love.  I hope you enjoy the watching my story as much as I did in making it.
